Copper plate engraving. Approx. 7. 5 x 4.5 cm in the plate. Thomas Cranmer (2 July 1489 – 21 March 1556), Archbishop of Canterbury during the reigns of Henry VIII and Edward VI. An important figure in the English Reformation, he promoted the separation of the English Church from Rome. Responsible for establishing the first Anglican doctrines and liturgies, esp. the Book of Common Prayer and the Thirty-Nine Articles. Cranmer was tried for treason and heresy by "Bloody" Mary I, and died a Protestant martyr. VG, with small corners missing outside the image.
